This year’s District Convention
will be legendary, literally. “Legends” is this year’s convention theme, and we
will all be sure to become legends through service. It will be held in the last
weekend of March at The Legends at Capitol Hill, on the outskirts of
Montgomery. Don’t miss this opportunity to attend various workshops, dances,
and speeches that will surely enliven your Key Club experience. Also, you will elect
next year’s District officers. You will
not only bond with your fellow class mates, but meet scores of new people as
excited as you are about service.
If you have
attended a District Convention in the past, then remember the self-satisfaction
following the elections, the exhaustion after the dances, and the chills given
by the inspirational speeches. If you haven’t, remember that there is a first
time for everything. My first DCON was two years ago, and if I hadn’t attended,
I probably would not foster the enthusiasm for community involvement that I do
today. I encourage all Key Clubbers to attend. All you’ve got to lose is a
weekend; all you’ve got to gain is an experience that will likely influence your
attitude towards service for the rest of your life. Bring friends. Make
friends. Become legend.

The Major Emphasis Program (MEP) was instituted at the first ever Key Club International Convention; a project that was designed so that all clubs could work towards a common goal. Every year, Key Clubbers around the world work together through the Major Emphasis Program to make a difference in children’s lives Internationally. Since it’s foundation, the MEP has always been “Children: Their Future, Our Focus.” This year, however, the service initiative has been changed to “Live to Learn.”
Key Clubbers have always recognized the value of younger children - especially the significance of their education. This year however, the focus has been intensified on the learning and education of these important individuals. Key Clubbers now have the opportunity to help elementary-aged kids improve their knowledge and social skills through projects such as “Read and Lead” and “Reading Is Fundamental” as well as through organizations such as the Big Brothers and Big Sisters of America, Head Start Learning Centers, and The Boys and Girls Clubs of America.
Imagine what it would be like if all the kids in your elementary school had a Key Clubber who talked with them, tutored them, played with them — served as a role model. The impact we could have on these children is tremendous. This project is ours, the time is now… let’s teach the future of America what it means to live to learn!
Sincerely in service,
Alicia Hafner
